As actors, we have big to-do lists. Between classes, auditions, rehearsals, mailings, bookings, job, and life, it can be hard to find a balance. At times, I’ve found myself focused so much on the marketing aspect of my own acting career, that craft was put on the back-burner, and vice versa. There’s only so many hours in the day, and only so much money (or energy) to go around, right?
Are you feeling lopsided with how you’re spending your time? Here are four steps I’ve used to bring harmony to my own acting career:
1. Evaluate How You Spend Your Time
Take a look at your calendar for the last 2 or 3 months and write down how much time you spent on your acting craft (rehearsing, going to class, reading plays, etc.), and how much you spent on actor marketing (website updates, meetings, mailings, etc.). You might have an idea without checking your calendar, but do this step anyway – you might be surprised. Knowledge is power, so be honest about how you’ve been spending your time.
2. Decide If It’s Time for a Change
Armed with your newfound knowledge, ask yourself if you think something is getting overlooked or could use a little juju. Are you going to class every week, but haven’t reached out to any casting directors in months? Or do you send out your mailings like clockwork but never take time to work on your songs or monologues? Where does your career need your energy and what does that look like for you?
3. Make a Game Plan
Now that you have your intention, go back to your calendar and schedule your time. Keep in mind that it is probably not possible or even desirable to divvy up your time evenly. The point is to give each aspect of your career the thought and attention it needs at any given time. You may have months that are craft focused and months that are marketing focused. That’s okay, as long as you’re aware of it and plan accordingly. Make a pledge that you will honor this commitment to yourself and your career.
4. Tweak as Necessary
Try it out for a month or so, and then look back at your calendar again. Did you honor your commitment to yourself? If not, why? Perhaps you were over-ambitious with the time you actually have. If this happens, don’t be hard on yourself! Reevaluate and tweak as necessary. It’s YOUR career. Make your schedule work FOR you!
