Why (Re)Size Is Everything

Keep your website lean and mean - compress your photos!

Have you ever visited a website and it just takes forever for the site to download? If you have, my guess is you felt frustrated and annoyed and you probably gave up before the site completely opened.

I’m pretty sure this is not how you want your own website visitors to react. Am I right?

That’s why it is super important to learn how to resize photos before adding them to your website. If you work with a web designer, they will do this for you. But if you’re going the DIY route, it’s a good idea to become familiar with the world of photo resizing.

Here are some tips:

Straight From The Source

The printable files you receive from your photographer are usually more than 3 MB each in size. This will not make your website, or website visitors, happy. So be sure to ask your photographer to send you files in a web-friendly size in addition to your printable files.

Optimize It

If you didn’t get web-friendly files from your photographer – no problem! Just use one of the many free image compressors on the web. Try the free sites imageoptimizer.net or picresize.com. You want to end up with a file about 400 kb (give or take).

One Small Thing

On the other end of the spectrum, if you start with an image that is too small you will end up with a photo that looks pixelated or blurry on your website. If the photo is smaller in width than the space you want to fill, then you’re better off using another photo that’s the correct size.

Now your website photos will be picture perfect. Happy resizing!
